Don't think the rubber or those bikes allowed knee scraping.

the knee-down thing came later from America (via Kenny Roberts (& others) flat track racing backgrounds).
These gentlemen clung pretty much rigidly to the bike & tipped the whole thing right over - whereas today they are effectively trying to keep the bike more upright while they windsail off the side.
Mike Hailwood regularly wore-away the toe of his boots.
